Here is this week's dose of “5-Point Friday”. A weekly round-up of the sports news and stories that I find most interesting and enjoyable.
Football news that I'm researching -
The city of Oakland today in federal court "filed a lawsuit challenging the relocation of the Raiders" to Las Vegas. The "long-awaited suit does not ask for the team to remain in Oakland, but seeks monetary damages for the 'illegal move.'”
The city said that the 32 NFL teams "colluded together as an 'illegal cartel' to demand that cities such as Oakland bankroll new stadiums with public funds or else be shut out of the marketplace with team relocations." On top of antitrust violations, the complaint "alleges that the Raiders and NFL breached their contract with the city."
Rugby League news that is interesting -
The National Rugby League "can more than double the money it makes from the Sydney grand final and Origin matches if these big games are taken interstate." Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and New Zealand "are willing to pay the NRL to move the big games away from Sydney because their economic impact justifies the outlay."
Swimming news that I'm looking at -
FINA announces that they will launch a new invite-only 'Champions Swim Series,' in 2019. Fina recently forced the cancellation of the new rival event, the International Swimming League (ISL). It will consist of a three-leg competition, between March and May, aimed at Olympic and World medalists, in an innovative format to create a world-class platform for elite swimming. The Series will comprise events of 50m, 100m, and 200m in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly (as well as the 400m free and 200m IM), in addition to four relay races. The new series will award over $3.9M in prize money, making it the richest swimming event in FINA history.
Soccer story that's intriguing me -
Barcelona confirmed that it ruled out playing Girona in Miami on January 26. The club said that it is no longer willing to play "after recognizing the lack of consensus around the proposal." It added that it "was and is willing to go to Miami to play a La Liga match," however, "until an agreement is reached between all the parties involved, the project cannot continue." La Liga will continue to pursue action to allow for an official match to be played outside of Spain.
What I have been listening to -
This week I took the time to listen to Tim Ferriss's interview with Lebron James and his coach Mike Mancias. Lebron and Mike offered their take on how they keep James one of the best athletes in the world, in his 16th NBA season. James further highlighted the importance of sleep in what they called "never-ending" recovery. James also stated that he keeps Theodore Roosevelt’s quote about “The Man in the Arena” in his locker and that he also writes a shorter version of it on his shoes before every game “There are always going to be people out there, who are going judge and critique you.”
Have a wonderful weekend, all!
Jonathan
